Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez during a question and answer with Bleacher Report earlier this week said he wouldn’t mind moving to the United States and playing in the MLS.
If there were rumors that a Real Madrid player was leaving for Major League Soccer, my top three guesses would be Vazquez, Mariano Diaz, or Nacho Fernandez.
The three are very good players, but are not regular starters under Zinedine Zidane and could move to a league where they would be a star. Lucas Vazquez fits that description perfectly.
Having made 136 appearances for Los Blancos since making his first-team debut back in 2015, Lucas has been been a fantastic super substitute for Zidane and was crucial in the team’s 2017 and 2018 Champions League triumphs.
During a Q&A, Vazquez made clear that while he would like to join MLS and play in the same country as some of his favorite athletes, he wants to end his career with Real Madrid.
"“It would be incredible. I would love to play in the MLS someday. I see other athletes as inspiration. Rafa Nadal, Pau Gasol or Fernando Alonso are great examples for young people and everyone. I love basketball and I like tennis. I love LeBron James’ teams.”"
Vazquez has had quite an unusual season and has failed to truly make an impact. He has made 18 appearances in three competitions and missed over a month after a weight lifting accident broke a bone in his foot.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Lucas should leave the club and go to the MLS because he is not a good enough player. I think he would dominate the MLS with his great passing and crossing and he could hurt defenses with his pace if needed.
Vazquez will likely be competing with Marco Asensio when he is back healthy and youngster Rodrygo Goes who has delighted fans with plenty of goals in the Champions League.
Vazquez is under contract until the next summer, meaning the remainder of this season (if it happens) and next season are going to decide if the Spanish winger stays with Los Blancos until the end of his career or makes the switch.
Honestly, I would not be surprised either way. I could see him thriving in MLS or staying with Real Madrid if Zidane is still in charge.
