At one point, it seemed unthinkable to even contemplate the possibility of Harry Kane leaving Tottenham Hotspur, but Real Madrid would reportedly be the favorites to sign the ambitious striker if he’s available.
Real Madrid will be pursuing a top-notch attacking player in the summer transfer market, whenever it opens, because they know they still need to find goals. Although Karim Benzema has been shining as a striker, he’s not a primary goal-scorer, and the team gets into trouble whenever he has a slump in front of goal.
A wide forward who can score 30 goals in a season would be the priority, which is why Kylian Mbappe is the dream target. But he probably won’t be available until 2021. Real Madrid will keep trying to pursue Mbappe, but they know staying on PSG’s good side by playing the long game is imperative; the ball is in Mbappe’s court, after all.
Signing Mbappe this summer is unrealistic, but Real Madrid need goals now. Erling Haaland is another young superstar with all the traits to be a legend, including scary athletic ability, clinical finishing, and great tactical awareness. Those are all traits Mbappe has, but Haaland is more of a traditional No. 9.
Haaland is also not expected to be available, since Borussia Dortmund need him in 2020-2021 to remain highly competitive after Jadon Sancho likely leaves. (Manchester United are the favorites.)
Harry Kane is 26 years old and isn’t coming off a season remotely near to the level of Mbappe’s or Haaland’s due to injuries, but he’s long been rumored as a possible target for Real Madrid. The England international is a true No. 9 who could explode if he upgrades teams from Tottenham to Madrid, and it’s sounding more and more likely he could leave Spurs as Daniel Levy’s decisions devolve the club into complacency.
According to a report from Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones, there are signs Kane is contemplating a move away from Spurs, which, at one point in the past, would have seemed like a shock. But given Kane’s ambitions and Spurs’ struggles, it’s a real possibility, even this summer.
And per Jones, if Kane were to leave, Real Madrid would be the “most likely landing spot”. He reports rivals FC Barcelona, Manchester United, and Manchester City have “genuine interest”, but later adds that Levy would prefer to sell Kane outside the Premier League.
Of course, that’s if Levy has any interest in selling Kane at all. Previous rumors regularly placed Kane’s price tag as above 150 million euros. If Real Madrid were unwilling to pay that for a better player in Paul Pogba, why would they spend that same money on Kane? Although forwards are more expensive, Kane isn’t much younger than Pogba or much better than Benzema.
The Kane rumors are worth keeping an eye on, because they’ve grown from whispers to softly-spoken words. And Real Madrid are usually a dream destination for the world’s most ambitious and talented players.
