Real Madrid : Top 5 moments of the 2019-20 season
1. Vinicius Jr.’s goal in El Clasico
Was there really a better moment this season than this goal? A goal to send Madrid on their way to a first El Clasico home win in the league since 2014-15 season, easily makes it one of the best moments of the season. But add the result of the game before the Clasico, the position in the league table and this goal easily becomes the best moment of the season.
Los Blancos had just faced Manchester City in the Champions League round of 16 first leg and lost 1-2 at the Bernabeu. The Whites were also two points behind Barcelona in the table and a loss would have put Madrid five points behind in the title race. In the first Clasico at the Camp Nou, Madrid had dominated most of the game but just couldn’t finish any of the chances they created and were held to a goalless draw.
This game seemed to be heading to the same narrative with Madrid particularly dominating in the second half, pressing Barca ferociously and winning all the 50-50 challenges but not being able to score. But all of that changed in the 70th minute where Vinicius ran on to a brilliant ball from Toni Kroos after being directed to do so by the German maestro. Vinicius then managed to score after his shot from a tight angle took a slight deflection from Pique.
It was rewarding for all the domination from Madrid and Vini’s good form over the past couple of games. Madrid scored a second from substitute Mariano Diaz and won the Clasico.
Of course, the season hasn’t concluded yet and will most likely be played out after the current crisis is over. Let’s hope there will be more great moments like these!
