Real Madrid will almost certainly have to sell James Rodriguez this summer with one year left on the attacking midfielder’s contract, but don’t expect Manchester United to be suitors.

James Rodriguez has been a fan favorite at the Santiago Bernabeu for years, with Real Madrid fans welcoming his return to La Liga last season after a quietly successful two-year loan spell at Bayern Munich, specifically when former Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti ran the ship.

Unfortunately, James’ 2019-2020 campaign was nondescript due to injuries, which robbed him after he had a strong start to the campaign. The attacking midfielder created big chances and work hard on defense, doing everything possible to impress Zinedine Zidane. But ultimately, injuries derailed his campaign, and Isco ended up blossoming in a big bounce-back season.

Now, Real Madrid will be faced with a decision. James is still a productive player who can help the team, but with young attacking midfielders coming up the ranks, Isco playing great football again, and only one year left on the player’s deal, Los Blancos will most likely have to sell.

Whether or not they get fair value, however, remains to be seen, especially in the uncertain transfer market to come.

As such, destinations in the Premier League seem most likely for James. Arsenal have been consistently linked since the winter period, Everton could be a great fit with Ancelotti rebuilding the team, and Wolves have even been mentioned as a suitor.

However, according to a report from Sky Sports, via MARCA, the biggest club of them all has no interest in the Colombian midfielder.

Manchester United had previously been linked to James Rodriguez in the winter period, but he was unavailable to buy. Instead, the Red Devils bought a younger and better playmaker in Bruno Fernandes, who was once a Madrid transfer target.

Fernandes has blossomed as a much-needed creator in the final third, so United are reportedly turning their attention to Aston Villa’s dynamic dribbler Jack Grealish. James isn’t quite the player they need, so Madridistas can remove the Red Devils from the list of possible Premier League suitors for their star.
