Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has a world-class squad at his disposal but some players are underrated and aren’t appreciated as much as they should. Who are the three most underrated?

Los Blancos have always had some of the top players in their respective positions playing for the club. Over the years, great players have come and won plaudits and praise over their performances for Real Madrid. While most players get the praises they deserve, some don’t.

Players are usually underrated for various reasons. They get overlooked sometimes because of their personalities or getting overshadowed by another player who’s a legend. Sometimes it could be their role in the team, that keeps them in the shadow and doesn’t allow them to get much credit. For whatever reason, here are the three players who are underrated in the Real Madrid squad.

3. Thibaut Courtois

This one was a hard choice. While the other two players popped up in my mind at the very start, I had to think a lot about who’d be my third player. But in the end, it was clear it had to be Courtois, especially after his performances this season.

Courtois had a rough start to his Real Madrid career. The golden glove winner of the 2018 world cup seemed to have lost his form after joining Los Blancos. The start of the 2019-20 season brought hope that he would recover his former form but to no avail. The criticism was at it’s highest in the 2-2 draw vs Club Brugge where he was substituted at half time.

But ever since that game, Courtois has had an impressive turnaround to the point that there have been games won due to the shot stopper’s performances. His stats this season have been great so far. According to footystats, he has kept 12 clean sheets in 24 games in La Liga this season, conceding a goal every 144 minutes. That’s a rate of 0.63 goals per 90 minutes.

Beyond just stats, there have been some impressive performances this season to help Real eke out close wins. The Whites defense has been impressive this season and a lot of credit for that has to go to Courtois, who has been among the top three goalkeepers in the world this season.
