Real Madrid center midfielder Luka Modric is expected to return for another season in 2020-2021, but how will that impact Martin Odegaard?

Although La Liga is attempting to resume the 2019-2020 season at some point in the coming months, Real Madrid fans have turned their attention to 2020-201 when the club will have an even stronger starting XI.

The strength of that XI could depend on the futures of two loanees. Borussia Dortmund right back Achraf Hakimi is expected to return, but with concerns about playing time and interest from big clubs like PSG and Juventus, there’s no guarantee.

Then there’s attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard, who is also fresh off a sensational season. The Real Sociedad man will likely remain with the club to honor a two-year loan agreement. However, Real Madrid could use Odegaard’s immense talent, as he’s clearly ready to make a difference at the Santiago Bernabeu. After all, he had two standout performances at the venue in 2019-2020.

According to a report from MARCA’s Carlos Carpio, Odegaard’s future still depends on veteran midfielder Luka Modric’s. Taking this a step further, MARCA claims that if Modric decides to stay for another season, Odegaard will remain with La Real. But if Modric chooses to retire or join a different league, such as teaming up with David Beckham in Major League Soccer, then Los Blancos would recall Odegaard from his loan.

Modric still has the ability to make a difference as a key player in the midfield rotation, having been a bright spot in 2019-2020. The hard-working center midfielder scored some bangers last season, made some crucial passes, and still provided cover and running despite being 34.

As such, it’s unlikely Modric leaves, so Real Madrid fans should expect to see Odegaard light it up for Sociedad for one more season. Then, he’ll be ready for superstardom at the Bernabeu in 2021-2022.
