Real Madrid have identified Rennes defensive midfielder Eduardo Camavinga as one of their top targets in the 2020 summer transfer market, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be available.

Recent reports have made it seem like there is a strong likelihood Real Madrid will sign Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes this summer. Zinedine Zidane is high on the player, he fits the kind of young star Florentino Perez wants to target, he dreams of joining Real, and he would likely come at a reduced cost in the upcoming market.

However, it’s important for Madridistas to pump the brakes a little bit, because a recent report indicates Rennes could hold onto Camavinga for another year.

According to a report from L’Equipe, via GetFootballNewsFrance.com, Camavinga has told Rennes that he will not leave the Ligue 1 club this summer if they qualify for the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League.

In Ligue 1, the top three teams qualify for the Champions League. Rennes currently sit in third place, though they are in quite the fight with Lille, who are only one point behind them. Lille also have a couple of Real Madrid transfer targets in center midfielder Boubakary Soumare and striker Victor Osimhen.

Camavinga is undoubtedly a priority for Real Madrid, as the 17-year-old is already one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. He can play as a box-to-box midfielder or defensive midfielder, as he has the most upside in a role that acknowledges his ability to pass and progress the ball, in addition to his brilliant defending.

Los Blancos will probably still pursue Camavinga, who could cost about 60 million euros, which is approximately what the club spent on Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer.

But per L’Equipe’s report, no talks have actually occurred between Real and Rennes for Camavinga, which makes sense since active transfer talks are not ongoing during the pandemic. However, Real could still have strong interest.

Keep an eye out for more developments regarding Camavinga’s availability and this reported “pact” with Rennes.
