The Grit

Paul Pogba is an elegant, technical player who can embarrass fellow midfielders, score wondergoals, assist for others, and keep a game ticking with the quality of his passing. But he’s also a mature midfielder who can lead by example and play any role for a team, willing to do the dirty work to win games.

Take a look at what Pogba did for France in the 2018 World Cup. Luka Modric soaked up all the plaudits for Croatia for his World Cup performance – and deservingly so. But Pogba was the man who bossed the World Cup Final and was impervious throughout the tournament, playing in an unselfish role controlling possession and shielding the back four. When he needed to make plays offensively, he did so, but he generally let Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe receive the space they needed to wreak havoc.

Pogba is a flexible player. He can do whatever Zinedine Zidane or any manager asks of him, provided they treat him with respect and have an organization that is able to support him. At United, he was being run into the ground by incompetence, yet he still had 22 goal contributions in 2018-2019.

Although Pogba is no defensive midfielder, he is an asset defensively due to his reading of the game. The 27-year-old averaged an outstanding 2.2 tackles per game for France during the World Cup with 1.0 interceptions per game and has hit 1.5 tackles per game in six different seasons for United and Juventus. He would regularly average more than two tackles per game for the Old Lady.
