Real Madrid: Grading the forwards from the 2019-2020 season
Real Madrid’s biggest weakness in the 2019-2020 season was at the forward position, but there were still a few standout performers.
Los Blancos had the best defense in La Liga last season, but they continued to have issues scoring goals themselves. Eden Hazard‘s impact in late October and most of November was evident, but after Real Madrid‘s biggest summer signing went down with an injury, Real’s attacking output went with him.
Clearly, Florentino Perez and Zinedine Zidane will need to obtain some attacking reinforcements, which will be difficult in the current market. However, there were some encouraging performances, despite the struggles.
With the 2019-2020 season postponed, let’s grade each of Real’s forwards thus far.
ST Mariano Diaz
Let’s start with Mariano Diaz, who scored a fairytale goal in El Clasico when Zidane finally gave him some time in La Liga. It took Mariano mere seconds to bag his lone goal of the campaign, as he literally took on the FC Barcelona defense all by himself before the sealing the game at 2-0 with a cool finish.
All Mariano wants to do is prove himself at the Santiago Bernabeu, but he never got a chance last season. He’s far too good to sit on the bench, but it’s hard to see him playing consistently behind Karim Benzema and Luka Jovic.
