Real Madrid: Harry Kane is not the answer

Real Madrid have been linked to several big-name forwards in 2020, but here’s why Tottenham star Harry Kane isn’t the right answer.

Last season, Real Madrid had only one player with more than five goals in La Liga, and that was center forward Karim Benzema. But in nine La Liga games in the calendar year 2020, Benzema scored just twice. When his goals went dry, so, too, did the team’s.

Real Madrid spent 60 million euros on Luka Jovic last summer, and Jovic can be a future superstar striker for Benzema. He has solid link-up play, as evidenced by his pair of backheels to set up goals in 2019-2020, but he’s mostly known as a scorer. When he gets regular playing time, he’ll show that quality.

While Real would ideally sign a wide forward to pair with Benzema and work across from Eden Hazard to add to the team’s goal-scoring capabilities, the club has been linked to several star strikers this summer. Los Blancos most likely won’t be able to buy anyone this year, and top target Erling Haaland probably won’t be available on Borussia Dortmund’s end until 2021 anyway.

That said, Haaland isn’t the only No. 9 linked to Real Madrid. There are other out-and-out strikers who could be on the team’s list, and Harry Kane is one name who has been consistently reemerging in links to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones first reported on the possibility of Kane leaving Spurs and discussed the chances of Los Merengues being the club to try and pry Kane from the Premier League side. Since then, other links have emerged.

Given the uncertain financial situation in football, Tottenham are incredibly unlikely to sell Kane at this juncture. They would have already been reluctant in the first place, so Daniel Levy’s asking price would have been ridiculous. At a minimum, 150 million euros would have been required in the previous market, with Spurs likely looking for something approaching 200 million euros.

Even if Tottenham were willing to sell Kane in the new market or if the player finally decided to force a deal away from Levy’s poor decision-making so that he could fulfill his potential at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid would be looking at a hefty price tag.

Although Kane was a revelation in the 2017-2018 season with an astounding 41 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions after scoring 31 in 35 in the 2016-2017 season, his effectiveness has waned in the last two seasons. Injuries have hurt Kane, and while he was still efficient last season with 17 goals in 25 games for a struggling team, it’s hard for Real Madrid to justify his price tag.

Kane isn’t the answer. While Real want more goals and may want someone who spends more time in the box than Karim Benzema as the former Lyon star’s successor, they already spent 60 million euros on Luka Jovic. And Jovic is several years younger than Kane with just as much athleticism and technical quality.

It’s hard not to respect what Kane has done in the past, but, in the present, there’s just no way to logically envision a deal getting done or even being sensible for Los Blancos.
