While Real Madrid fans have been nervous about Casemiro’s upcoming contract end date, it sounds like the club have already signed the defensive midfielder to an extension.
There’s plenty of discussion surrounding the expiring contracts of Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric, James Rodriguez, and Lucas Vazquez among regular Real Madrid players, but the most important expiring contract belongs to Casemiro.
The best defensive midfielder in the world, Casemiro was one of La Liga’s best overall players and deserves serious consideration for 2019-2020 Player of the Year. He made an impact on both ends of the pitch but was especially brilliant defensively, consistently putting up world-class performances despite being overworked.
Recently, Carlos Forjanes of AS wrote that Real Madrid have been forced to put extension talks with Casemiro on hold due to the pandemic, and he urged Los Blancos to extend arguably their most important player as quickly as possible.
But now, Melchor Ruiz of COPE reports that Real Madrid have already signed Casemiro to a two-year extension that would set his new contract end date after the 2022-2023 season.
Per Ruiz, Casemiro’s new deal will also, as he deserves, include a salary bump. He adds that the contract extension hasn’t been made official, but his sources indicate that a deal has been agreed to between both parties.
That would be excellent news and a relief to Madridistas, who know Casemiro’s quality in midfield is irreplaceable. He sets a benchmark that nobody else in the Champions League or La Liga can meet, with his quality tackling, tight marking, brilliant reading of the game, athleticism, and box-to-box ability.
Once Case’s deal is wrapped up, Real’s focus will be on finding a young player who can support him next. Eduardo Camavinga of Rennes is the dream, if they can convince him and the team to make the switch sooner than later.
