The best defensive midfielder in the world, Casemiro shut down Lionel Messi in the second Clasico, aiding Real’s effort in an impressive 2-0 clean sheet over their bitter rivals.

Real, in fact, kept five total clean sheets against rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in 2019-2020, with Case playing a key role in all of those games. The tireless midfielder helps on offense, too, as exemplified by his assist for Rodrygo Goes’ debut goal or his crucial brace in a 2-1 win over Sevilla.

The case can be made that Casemiro was La Liga’s Most Valuable Player overall after only Lionel Messi. It’s too bad defensive midfielders don’t get as much love, because Casemiro is one of the best players in the world at any position.
