Real Madrid: If Newcastle comes calling, sell Gareth Bale
By Ben Sundock
Strange rumors have emerged during the last couple of weeks regarding Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale‘s future in Spain. After nearly leaving for the Chinese League last summer, Newcastle could offer the Welshman an escape from the Santiago Bernabeu.
Like it or not, Gareth Bale will be leaving Real Madrid within the next 12 to 18 months. The Welsh international has been an outcast at Real Madrid for a while now and the fans have started turning against him.
Although he won the club its most recent Champions League title with two stunning goals after coming off the bench, Bale has a complicated relationship with manager Zinedine Zidane and there have been well-documented disagreements between the two.
Recent rumors from the Daily Mail – which is not the most trustworthy source – have indicated that due to the impending purchase of Newcastle United by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), the club will make a run at Bale when the transfer window opens.
The reported bid is rumored to be around €60 million, so, if the Tooners come knocking, Real Madrid should not hesitate to say yes and sell Bale.
I have been a fervent defender of Bale for several years now and I have been a fan of his since he came over from Tottenham Hotspur. Although we supporters of the number 11 are in the minority, there are some Los Blancos players who also support Gareth Bale.
Just recently, midfielder Dani Ceballos voiced his confidence in the teammate, telling Deportes Cuatro, “It is a league [Premier League] that would be quite good for him, but he is a fundamental player for Madrid. Let us not forget everything he has given the club. Whoever does not trust him, put on the Champions League final. He has given enough to the club.”
While I would like to see Bale remain in the Spanish capital, he deserves to finish up his career on his terms. He and his agent Jonathan Barnett have said multiple times that they will honor the remainder of his contract with Real Madrid and stay with the club until it runs out in June 2022, but that seems rather unlikely given the current circumstances.
Therefore, if Newcastle submits a bid in the range Daily Mail is referencing, Real Madrid should not hesitate to let Gareth leave.
The club needs to offload some players in the transfer window if they want to make a run at Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe in the very near future and recouping 60 percent of Gareth’s original transfer fee seven years later is good business.
A return to the Premier League could rejuvenate his career and with Newcastle set to completely overhaul their first team thanks to all the money that will be invested, it looks like a win-win scenario for both Gareth Bale and Real Madrid.
