Real Madrid have one of the deepest squads in European football, so there are a few key players who are not guaranteed starting positions in 2020-2021.
When the 2020-2021 season begins, Real Madrid could have a roster that looks very different, depending on which players are sold. But even if Los Blancos cannot make enough sales to then afford new players, they should have a few new faces in the former of returning loanees, such as fullbacks Achraf Hakimi and Sergio Reguilon.
If Real Madrid are able to start returning loanees or acquire new talent, here are three players who may no longer be considered starters in the 2020-2021 season.
RB Dani Carvajal
It’s unlikely Dani Carvajal will get bounced from the right back position next season, but it is a possibility. While Carvajal was the best right back in La Liga last season – and it honestly wasn’t close, with only Real Betis’ Emerson providing any sort of a challenge – Real Madrid could have an even better right back return to the club on loan.
Borussia Dortmund’s Achraf Hakimi has recorded 10 assists in the 2019-2020 Bundesliga season and is a world-class fullback. Hakimi can also play on the wing and on either side of the formation, but when he returns to Real (well, IF he returns, since Dortmund could extend his loan), he will likely do so as a right back.
Based on how well Hakimi has played for BVB, Carvajal cannot view his starting position as a lock for 2020-2021. For the first time, he will have real competition.
