Real Madrid have a need for a top-notch goal-scorer, but they will hold off on showing interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland until the 2021 transfer window.

The upcoming summer transfer window will be filled with uncertainty, as teams simply don’t know what the market will look like or who will truly be available. Real Madrid have a need for a world-class scorer, but they seem to be holding on pursuing their top targets Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Both men will be nearly impossible to sign in 2020. PSG want to do whatever they can to hold onto Mbappe, and while he is the perfect fit for Real Madrid and will likely make the jump to the Santiago Bernabeu at some point, Real can’t risk upsetting PSG by aggressively attempting to sign the star man this year.

As for Haaland, he hasn’t been expected to be on the block this summer, especially since Borussia Dortmund will already lose one superstar in Jadon Sancho, likely to Manchester United. Los Blancos also have interest in him.

Haaland could be a dream signing in the future, forming a nasty attacking trio with Eden Hazard and Mbappe. But for now, Real will wait. COPE’s Miguel Angel Diaz reports that Los Blancos won’t make much contact with BVB and Haaland this summer, as they want to put trust in Luka Jovic for one more year.

Jovic was the Bundesliga’s breakout striker in 2018-2019, and Real purchased him for 60 million euros, with Zinedine Zidane showing great interest in the Serbian international. While Jovic played a minor role in 2019-2020, he has world-class potential. Giving up on him already would be unwise, which means signing Haaland, even if he has more natural ability than Jovic, would be imprudent. Jovic can be the answer.

So expect Real Madrid to give Jovic more opportunities to shine behind Karim Benzema, who has only a few years left of starting-caliber play. If Jovic can’t make good on his chances, then Real can move forward with their interest in Haaland, whose asking price of 70 million euros should only increase with time.
