Real Madrid: Top 5 Greatest Managers in Club History
1. Miguel Munoz
The Madrid native Miguel Munoz captained Real Madrid to their first European Cup title and later went on to manage the best team in the world for 14 years.
Munoz, like so many others, started their managerial career with the Merengues reserve team. After spending a brief spell at the club in a caretaker capacity in 1959, Munoz got the job full-time in April of 1960.
The Spanish coach had a tough task ahead with Barcelona set to win the league and looked dominant in the European Cup as well. However, Munoz turned things around for the Royal Whites at least in Europe; defeating the Catalan rivals 6-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals, and triumphing over Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in the finals, winning their 5th straight European Cup. Following the victory, Munoz took the Madrid club into three more European Cup finals but winning one of them in 1966.
Moreover, the Madrid man led Los Blancos into domestic dominance for the next decade, winning five consecutive league titles from 1961-1965, eight in ten seasons. During his time, Munoz managed the inexplicable task of transitioning the team from the golden era of Alfredo di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, and Raymond Kopa into the new blood of Amancio Amaro, Santillana, and Ignacio Zoco. He kept the team competitive following the departure of the old guards.
Miguel Munoz spent 14 years at the club winning 14 trophies, making him the most decorated manager in Real Madrid history. He is the longest-serving Real Madrid manager, and his legacy is unmatched.
