Real Madrid to hire Athletic Club coach for 2020-2021?

CD Tacon will officially become Real Madrid Femenino to complete the takeover in 2020-2021, and the transition could be cemented with a new manager.

After signing three global stars in Kosovare Asllani, Chioma Ubogagu, and Sofia Jakobsson, CD Tacon stayed afloat in Spain’s top flight in their first season in Liga Iberdrola. And in 2020-2021, Tacon will become Real Madrid Femenino to officially complete Los Blancos’ takeover of the Madrid-based women’s football club.

Manager David Aznar has led the way for Tacon since 2018, but Real Madrid will almost certainly want a new and even more accomplished manager with greater tactical prowess to lead the project in 2020-2021.

According to a report from MARCA’s Cristina Barba and David Menayo, Real Madrid have eyes on Angel Villacampa as Aznar’s replacement.

Villacampa is currently Athletic Club’s manager, and he’s achieved great things for the Bilbao club. They finished fifth last season to Tacon’s 10th, and they were two points away from a top-four finish.

He was previously rival Atletico Madrid’s coach from 2015-2016 to 2017-2018. After finishing third in his first season with Los Rojiblancos, Villacampa won Liga Iberdrola in back-to-back seasons. In 2017-2018, they edged out Barcelona by one point in the table, with Dolores Gallardo shining in goal and Sofia Bermudez scoring 19 times to tie for second in the league.

Villacampa’s track record is exceptional, and he could be a great hire for Real Madrid in their first season under the name as a women’s team. With players like Ubogagu and Asllani, Real have world-class talent and should add more despite the financial crisis, since they can continue adding key players in Spain.

Per MARCA, Villacampa’s current contract with Athletic Club ends on June 30, and Spain’s women’s league has already been suspended due to COVID-19. The two-time Liga Iberdrola champion and former Copa de la Reina winner could be what Real needs. This deal seems to have a high chance of happening.
