Real Madrid is in a good place financially despite play being suspended, which means they have money to extend contracts this summer. Here are three players who need to be retained.

Real Madrid’s board of executives deserves a lot of praise for the way they have maintained the team’s finances during this trying time.

The club took measures into their own hands by cutting player and first-team staff salaries by 30 percent and have allowed medical personnel to use the Santiago Bernabeu as a storage facility to combat the virus in Spain.

According to rumors, the club will not look to spend a ton of money during the summer transfer window as they did a year ago, so, president Florentino Perez and manager Zinedine Zidane can focus more on resigning key players who are in the first team now.

Here are the three players who need to be resigned ASAP.

Alphonse Areola

I have alluded to this move before, but with no matches taking place over the last couple of months, I can say without a shred of doubt that Los Blancos should make Alphonse Areola the permanent back-up to Thibaut Courtois.

Andriy Lunin has had a very difficult stint since signing with Real Madrid at the end of the summer in 2018 and the Ukrainian has still not made a first-team appearance. He has been loaned out to three different teams and has failed to show the club anything meaningful.

Areola, on the other hand, has been rather consistent in several appearances while on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

The last appearance he made was the worst in his time with Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey loss to Real Sociedad, but that should not tarnish his track record. If Zidane is lucky enough to make the move permanent, Real will be in very good hands with two quality goalkeepers.

Sergio Ramos

This one is a no-brainer and needs very little explanation.

Captain Sergio Ramos has been a staple of the Real Madrid backline for well over a decade now and has won every trophy he can during an illustrious career.

With his current contract set to expire in June 2021, expect president Perez to extend Sergio by a year or two either this summer or in December. Ramos turned 34 in March, but has shown that his quality is not slipping.

Eder Militao is waiting in the wings to take over for Ramos when that day comes, but don’t expect that day for another two or maybe three years.

Luka Modric

Another star over the last decade or so at Real Madrid has been midfielder Luka Modric. The Croatian international received a lot of hate from the fans when he was signed from Tottenham Hotspur all those years ago, but Luka has become a fan favorite with his stunning work rate and consistency.

Modric’s contract will expire at the same time as Ramos’ and since Luka will turn 35 in September, he will likely receive an extension of a year or two at the most.

Real Madrid has the depth in the midfield to take over for Modric when he is ready to move on, but having his veteran leadership in big matches can not be overlooked.

Federico Valverde has asserted himself as a future star and has even dethroned Modric as the regular starter in the midfield three. However, Luka deserves to finish an incredible career with the Spanish giants.
