2. The Remontada (Real Madrid vs. VfL Wolfsburg – Quater-Final, 2nd Leg, 2015/16)

Real Madrid had one of those magical Champions League nights at the Santiago Bernabeu en route to the first trophy of the three-peat. Once again, Ronaldo was at the heart of it all.

Los Blancos traveled to Wolfsburg for the 1st Leg of this Quarterfinal matchup and came back a stunning 2-0 behind on aggregate. Facing an embarrassing early exit from the UCL, the Royal Whites needed a comeback in the 2nd Leg. They had a mountain to climb and a long 90 minutes at the Bernabeu.

Zinedine Zidane’s men knew it would not be easy, but nothing was impossible. They needed an early goal to ease the pressure and what a start they had. Ronaldo was a man in a mission; he pounced on a deflected pass from Dani Carvajal and slotted it past the goalkeeper to half the deficit in the 16th minute. Wolfsburg came into the city of Madrid, believing they can pull off an upset of a lifetime, but the belief soon faded away. A minute after the opener, Cristiano rose to meet a Kroos corner and flicked in a fine header for the second and equalizing goal.

Real Madrid had nullified the two-goal margin. However, a Ronaldo exhibition would not be complete without a hattrick, that too from a trademark freekick on the 77th minute. The remontada was complete. Just like that, Los Blancos climbed the mountain.
