Is Real Madrid Kylian Mbappe’s only option besides PSG?

Kylian Mbappe has always been Real Madrid’s top target.

Real Madrid will likely push to sign Kylian Mbappe in the summer 2021 transfer window, because that’s the first year the PSG superstar could conceivably be signed. PSG have consistently made it clear that they won’t entertain offers for Mbappe in 2020, and that was even before the COVID-19 pandemic caused Ligue 1’s 2019-2020 season to be shortened.

Mbappe is already the most valuable player in the world on the transfer market, and he would be a perfect fit for Los Blancos tactically. His awareness of space, speed, and lethal finishing would make him a perfect counterattacking player for Real, and Mbappe could even play on the right side so that Eden Hazard and either Karim Benzema, Erling Haaland, or Luka Jovic could start in the middle.

PSG’s situation with Mbappe is an interesting one, because the club wants to do everything in its power to keep him. They are attempting to sign him to a massive contract extension, and they may even be willing to pay him more than Neymar, who was a record-breaking transfer a couple of summers ago from FC Barcelona.

More from The Real Champs

Mbappe is crucial to PSG’s ambitions of winning the Champions League, because their project will never truly be respected until they attain this goal. With Mbappe, Neymar, and now Mauro Icardi signed permanently, this is their best chance to do that.

But Mbappe may prefer a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, whose prestige stands above any other. Real Madrid are the world’s biggest club, and their biggest signings are Galacticos.

Right now, Real only have one true Galactico signing from recent years, and that represents their shift in mentality from overspending on one player to signing future superstars while they are still affordable.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes, for example, can be Ballon d’Or-type players in the future.

That said, Real are short on star power, especially in the goals department. Mbappe, who idolizes France legend and Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane, understand their need and how he could transform the club.

Real are just two years and Cristiano Ronaldo removed from a Champions League three-peat under Zidane. With a strong defense, deep midfield, plenty of young talent, and Hazard, Los Blancos could make the magic happen at the Bernabeu with Mbappe.

A player of Mbappe’s caliber will surely be wanted by more clubs than Real Madrid, but it seems like Juventus and Liverpool are the only clubs even in the discussion. And when it comes to Juve, while they would love to have another superstar to pair with Ronaldo in their Champions-League-or-bust approach, Mbappe just doesn’t seem realistic.

Liverpool’s chances seem slim, too, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane probably not going anywhere in the near future. If they did, would it be worth the risk of selling either of them without a guaranteed replacement in Mbappe? Liverpool are in the mix, but they seem far less likely to pry away Mbappe than Real, who maintain a great relationship with PSG.

If it’s not Real Madrid, it’s PSG, right? It seems as if Mbappe will either wind up with Real in 2021 or 2022, or he’ll simply renew with the club of his childhood city of Paris.
