Real Madrid are not the favorites to sign Kai Havertz

Real Madrid don’t seem to have much of a chance at Kai Havertz.

Although Real Madrid have Martin Odegaard rising through the ranks, Isco playing great football, James Rodriguez still on the books, and Marco Asensio set to return from injury, they have reportedly been showing interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz.

And why not? Real don’t need to sign another attacking midfielder, but Havertz is a special player. He’s so special, in fact, that Zinedine Zidane has reportedly been smitten with the Bundesliga phenom.

Sport Bild reported, via Bulinews.com’s Henrik Petersen, that Real Madrid actually submitted an offer to Bayer for 80 million euros. But the Champions League hopefuls rejected the offer, as they would like to receive 100 million euros for the German international.

Los Blancos won’t be spending that kind of money in this market, least of all on a player they don’t need with Odegaard, who is essentially as good, ready to return in the next two seasons.

That’s exactly when Havertz would have joined, since he could sign with a club and be loaned back for a year. (That would be ideal and is, apparently, what Real offered to Leverkusen.)

According to a report from The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, Los Merengues aren’t the favorites to sign Havertz either. That honor unsurprisingly belongs to Bayern Munich, who are said to be “favored” by the player.

Delaney writes that they also have the advantage of being at a further stage in negotiations than any other club.

Liverpool and Manchester United have also shown interest in the 20-year-old.

Havertz is an incredible player who is ideally a No. 10 but has the versatility to play on the right, as a false nine, or even as a more traditional center midfielder. So he could help Real Madrid, even if Odegaard has the No. 10 spot sealed for the future.

That said, 100 million euros is a price Real won’t match. But will the favorites, Bayern, match it? They have been favored for Havertz since the rumors began in 2019, but they don’t seem willing to spend a lot of money, especially not in this market and with other players like Leroy Sane still on their attacking wishlist.

Bayer wisely want to do what Borussia Dortmund is doing with fellow Real target and Bundesliga sensation Jadon Sancho. They want to get his value no matter the market. It will happen for Sancho, but don’t expect Havertz to get that big move in 2020.
