Real Madrid sit in second place, but they really should be in first.

As talented as Real Madrid’s roster is, they can often frustrate their fan base, which always has the highest of expectations for the prolific Spanish club, with their inconsistency.

From October’s 1-0 loss on the road to Mallorca to their most recent stumble against Real Betis, Los Blancos have had their fair share of frustrating results in 2019-2020.

It’s why Real currently sit in second place behind arch rivals FC Barcelona in La Liga despite outplaying La Blaugrana in two Clasicos, including a dominant 2-0 win in March.

More from The Real Champs

Los Blancos have looked so much better under Zinedine Zidane and are playing high-quality football, shutting down their two biggest rivals to zero total goals allowed in five head-to-head matches.

Despite the injuries, inconsistency, and puzzling dropped points, Real Madrid are still in a great position to win the league. Barcelona aren’t in first because they are a dominant force.

Los Blancos have proven on multiple occasions that Barcelona are a poorly-run side being held together by the brilliance of Lionel Messi, who, by the way, has not hurt Real at all in 2019-2020.

No, Los Blancos’ worst enemies are themselves. They are fully capable of beating anyone, but they often beat themselves.

Mallorca, Betis, and even PSG in the Champions League are testaments to this self-made flaw.

But there’s a huge positive to this narrative for Real Madrid when it comes to their title chances. They may stand in their own way in so many frustrating losses, but that also means they are fully capable of righting the ship. If they stand in their way, then their problems are fixable. Real are not being outplayed by anyone else in the league; there is no unbeatable force in La Liga right now. But if there were to be one, it would be them.

Real Madrid will be stronger than ever when the 2019-2020 returns and they face Eibar on June 14 on their own turf. They will have their best player and crown signing of the 2019 summer transfer window, Eden Hazard, back from injury. Marco Asensio will also be back, ready to prove he’s the superstar he’s meant to be. And other players like Gareth Bale should be 100 percent and could surprise as contributors down the stretch.

La Liga is wide open for the taking. Yes, there is a two-point gap between Barcelona and Real, but the latter have shown they are better than the former. What they must do for the remaining games of the 2019-2020 season is place the focus fully on themselves and take care of business. If they can play to their potential and win the games they are supposed, a seemingly elusive title should be in their grasp again.
