Marcelo is facing increased competition at Real Madrid, but that isn’t stopping him.

Before the 2019-2020 La Liga season began, Real Madrid fans were preparing themselves for a huge position battle between the legendary Marcelo and new 50 million euro Lyon signing Ferland Mendy.

But the battle for the left back position turned out to be less heated than expected.

In short time, Mendy proved to be the significantly better option to Marcelo, as his defensive prowess has been unmatched in all of Europe at the position.

Mendy has steadily grown into a more influential attacking player, too, completing nearly two dribbles per game in La Liga, according to WhoScored.com.

Although Marcelo is now second-place to Mendy in the lineup, the Brazilian has proven useful, especially in big games.

His creativity, passing, and experience help a great deal in the attack, and he was sensational in Real Madrid’s 2-0 Clasico triumph over FC Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu in March.

Despite this, there have been rumblings of Real selling Marcelo, especially since Sergio Reguilon, who has rivaled Mendy as the league’s top left back in 2019-2020, is expected to return from loan. And Real surely don’t want to sell him.

However, the rumors linking Marcelo to clubs like Juventus don’t appear to have much threat.

Speaking on Radio MARCA, journalist Tatiana Mantovani stated that Marcelo wants to make a comeback as a key player for Los Blancos and prove to Zinedine Zidane that he remains an elite left back. He wants to stay in Madrid and remain with the team for as long as possible.

Although some Madridistas have to admit that Marcelo’s play has declined compared to the lofty standards he’s set in his illustrious career as a four-time Champions League winner, nobody wants to see such a beloved player leave the Bernabeu.

Marcelo has shown value to the team against the likes of PSG and Barcelona. These are not lightweights, and while he has become a liability against some opponents defensively, he is the kind of player you wouldn’t want to bet against. Let’s see how he makes an impression on Zidane for the remainder of 2019-2020 before Reguilon’s arrival from Sevilla.
