3. What will be Rodrygo’s role?

Rodrygo Goes was a Fall sensation for Real Madrid, scoring within seconds of his debut as a substitute against Osasuna for the second-fastest debut goal in club history behind No. 9 Ronaldo. A month later, Rodrygo scored a hat trick against Galatasaray. To date, per FBRef.com, Rodrygo’s 0.80 goals and assists per 90 minutes (without penalties) is the highest mark of any player on the team in all competitions.

But in the second half of the season, Zinedine Zidane moved Rodrygo back to Castilla in order to make sure the right winger’s development continued at a rapid pace. Rodrygo needs to be playing as often as possible, and while he’s clearly well ahead of the other players at Castilla, the level of competition remains appropriate for him.

At the same time, Rodrygo did show, especially against Galatasaray and Club Brugge in the Champions League, that he might actually be the team’s best option at the right wing position. But that was also in the past when Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez were the only other options.

With Marco Asensio healthy, Rodrygo may be more likely to stay in Castilla. But with more rotation needed, maybe Real have to call on him. Either way, his role and progress at Castilla will continue to be a storyline to monitor.
