Dani Carvajal stands alone

Since Alvaro Odriozola is still out on loan to Bayern Munich, Real Madrid have only one right back on the roster in Dani Carvajal. And their backup appears to be winger Lucas Vazquez, who has succeeded at the position before. Vazquez is truly the ultimate team player.

Unfortunately for Los Blancos, Vazquez isn’t in the official squad for this week’s game due to an injury, meaning Eder Militao is the default backup to Carvajal. Nacho Fernandez? He is also out with an injury.

Militao struggled at right back against Real Betis, and while Eibar’s attackers aren’t nearly as good, it’s clear Carvajal will have to play the full 90 minutes. He will be worked hard for the remainder of the season.

Javi Hernandez makes the squad

Elsewhere in the lineup, Castilla center back Javi Hernandez has made the squad, and Real Madrid fans should be excited about his development. He has been tremendous for Castilla this season and is perhaps the player who benefits the most from the increased squad number for the remaining La Liga games.

Hernandez may never play for the rest of the year, as he’ll be the fifth-choice center back behind Militao and Nacho once the latter returns. But it is nonetheless noteworthy to see the 21-year-old in the lineup against Eibar. Based on the amount of rotations and the ways injuries could mount, Hernandez could get first-team action before the season is through.
