Real Madrid: Lucas Vazquez joins Nacho, Luka Jovic on the injury table
By Ben Sundock
Real Madrid’s squad injuries are starting to mount up as it was announced Lucas Vazquez will miss the next few weeks with a muscle problem.
Real Madrid’s first-team players just can’t seem to stay healthy. Upon returning after the two month pandemic layoff, Luka Jovic was immediately placed on the injured list with a fractured foot after jumping off of a wall while in Serbia.
Shortly after, Nacho Fernandez and Mariano Diaz were both moved inside to train individually after the center back picked up a thigh muscle injury and the striker was scratched with an unknown problem.
The trend seems to be continuing as shortly before the La Liga match against Eibar, winger Lucas Vazquez was omitted from the squad. On Monday morning, the club announced that the man who was supposed to be backing up Dani Carvajal at fullback had picked up a calf injury.
"“Following the tests carried out today on our player, Lucas Vázquez, by the Real Madrid medical department, he has been diagnosed with a soleus muscle injury in his right leg. His recovery will continue to be assessed.”"
Lucas should be out for between two and three weeks according to initial reports, but the bigger problem here is that Dani Carvajal also picked up a knock in the win and was subbed off at halftime.
Ferland Mendy replaced the Spaniard and performed well, but he can not switch as seamlessly from wing to wing as Nacho.
Eder Militao could slot in at right back if Carvajal is forced to miss Thursday’s tie with Valencia, but from what I understand, pulling Dani off at halftime was nothing more than a precaution by Zidane to make sure the knock did not worsen.
Squad depth is what will win Real Madrid the league this season and already, we are seeing the same injuries that have plagued the first-team for years now. Let’s hope that the muscle injuries to Vazquez and Nacho are nothing serious and the two are back in training before the end of June.
If they are not, Zizou could have a dilemma on his hands. Achraf Hakimi is out on loan, Alvaro Odriozola is out on loan, and Sergio Reguillon is as well. Real Madrid’s options are incredibly limited on defense and that could pose a serious problem.
