Real Madrid picked up a crucial victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga.

Barcelona’s 0-0 draw with Sevilla left the door open for Real Madrid to move back into first place in La Liga. And this time, Los Blancos did not blow their chance, even if they had some luck on their side in the 2-1 win at the Anoeta Stadium.

Here were the top five performances from Real’s quality performance on the road against one of La Liga’s most exciting teams.

CB Raphael Varane

Just as he has been throughout 2020, Raphael Varane was dominant against Real Sociedad. Nothing seemed to perturb him. He surveyed the whole field, made interventions whenever he could, and was always there to clean up the danger.

It’s so easy to take Varane for granted, but he’s consistently one of Real Madrid’s top players. The France captain made four clearances and even completed a pair of dribbles, per WhoScored.com.

Sergio Ramos’ injury could be a tough blow to Real Madrid, but immediately after the team captain left the game with a knee ailment, Varane made sure the defense didn’t fall apart. Yes, they gave up a goal to the backpost, but it was no fault of Varane’s. Once again, he did not put a wrong foot forward in another commanding display.
