Real Madrid reportedly have interest in Wolfsburg goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.

Now that CD Tacon are officially Real Madrid, the club have huge ambitions for what the women’s team can accomplish in 2020-2021 after staying afloat in the Primera Division last season. Tacon finished in 10th place out of 16 teams despite major questions marks on defense and tactical issues, as the new signings – specifically Chioma Ubogagu, Sofia Jakobsson, and Kosovare Asllani – helped lead the way.

But Real Madrid Femenino will need to make some big signings in their first season of existence so that they can bridge the gap that exists between them and rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the top of the league. Barcelona were in first by nine points, while Atleti ended up second.

A veteran goalkeeper could go a long way to helping Las Blancas defensively, and Aftonbladet reports, via SoccerDonna.de, that Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl is set to leave VfL Wolfsburg, the most successful team in Germany and one of the best in the world, for a new challenge. She will leave after the DFB Pokal Final against Essen and is reportedly eyeing Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

The in-city rivals have squared off for top players before, and Atleti usually end up winning due to their status as a Champions League-quality side. But Real have ambitions and money to spend, and in Lindahl’s case, they also have the advantage of boasting Sweden’s two best attacking players in Asllani and Jakobsson. Lindahl’s familiarity with them could help.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper, as she showed in last year’s World Cup when Sweden finished third, remains one of the world’s best in goal. Lindahl is a former FA WSL champion and Olympic silver medalist who has won numerous goalkeeper awards in her country and was even a finalist for the Women’s PFA Player of the Year a few seasons ago.

Lindahl had 14 clean sheets in 20 matches this past season for Wolfsburg. She is a high-quality player with international recognition who could make Real that much better, but it won’t be easy to sign her.
