Real Madrid loanee Takefusa Kubo had a performance to remember in defeat.

Mallorca will be relegated at the end of the 2019-2020 La Liga season, but Real Madrid star-of-the-future Takefusa Kubo will remain in Spain’s top flight. His performances this season have been nothing short of remarkable, as the teenager has shown he has what it takes to be one of the best attacking midfielders in La Liga.

Over a week ago, Kubo impressed against his parent club at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, constantly running at Fede Valverde and Real’s elite back four while desperately trying to make something happen. Mallorca never found the back of the net, but they probably would have if Kubo’s supporting cast were better.

The story was the same on Friday evening against another La Liga stalwart, Atletico Madrid. The Rojiblancos prevailed 3-0 and never really broke a sweat, except when it came to defending the 19-year-old sensation.

Kubo made the left side of Atleti’s formation his and was by far Mallorca’s most dominant force. Per WhoScored.com, Kubo completed five key passes, won six dribbles, and drew three fouls to lead the team in each of those offensive categories. Furthermore, his teammates only had a total f three dribbles completed, meaning he doubled the team’s output in that stat. He also had more than double anyone else’s key passes and the team’s only shot on target.

You can only imagine what Kubo would be capable of on a better team, because he’s clearly taken on the leadership role in Mallorca’s attack but is lacking support. It’s why Real Madrid are ready to loan him to a bigger club in 2020-2021, perhaps alongside Martin Odegaard at Real Sociedad.

It seems like Kubo just keeps getting better and better every month, and Mallorca must feel embarrassed for not playing him regularly early in the season. He’s had the exact kind of progress a team loves to see a player make in their opening loan, and Kubo will be able to build on this success in 2020-2021.
