While some Real Madrid fans are still dreaming of a Neymar deal, it isn’t happening.

Barcelona tried to reunite with Neymar last summer, realizing they needed another superstar to player in their squad to help Lionel Messi return to the Champions League finals. Antoine Griezmann has helped keep the team in the title race, but they are currently four points behind a more well-balanced Real Madrid side.

Rumor has it that Real Madrid were also in on Neymar last summer as a way of thwarting their rivals, but a deal was never going to happen. Los Blancos had already spent around 300 million euros on transfers, including 100 million euros on Eden Hazard. They focused on signing young players at a variety of positions who can become world-class, and the returns on the likes of Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, and Rodrygo Goes are impressive.

According to a report from MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz, neither La Liga club will be pursuing the PSG superstar this summer either. MARCA states that Neymar “seems resigned” to stay at PSG. With regards to Real, it is stated that the club is “not contemplating” a move.

That report comes as no surprise, considering how much the market has been affected by COVID-19 and how irresponsible it would be for either club to pursue a major transfer like Paul Pogba or Lautaro Martinez – let alone the most recent record-breaking transfer in Neymar, 150 million euro cut price or not.

Neymar has injury issues, but he’s still an incredible player and is probably the best player in the world when looking at his creative output, finishing, dribbling skills, and disruptive movement off the ball. He is an intelligent, technical player who is becoming even more dangerous in a creative role for PSG, playing off Kylian Mbappe.

The top prize for Real is the younger Mbappe, since he would better fill Real’s void of goals from a wide forward. He has always been their top target, and his versatility and intelligent, clinical attacking play make him check all the boxes. They need someone who can consistently score and create his own chances with his movement on and off the ball.

Real Madrid are so stingy because they are saving up for Mbappe. Neymar is not a part of that plan, as great of a player as he is and as much as Real enjoy disrupting their arch rivals.
