Real Madrid attacking midfielder Oscar Rodriguez had a huge 2019-2020 season, and he’s ready for a new challenge.

Most of the attention around Real Madrid‘s loanees in 2019-2020 was focused on future superstars like Martin Odegaard, Takefusa Kubo, Achraf Hakimi, and Dani Ceballos, who have all been pinpointed as important prospects for quite some time. But a different name emerged as one of Real’s most productive loanees, especially in terms of goal-scoring.

Despite his best efforts, Oscar Rodriguez‘s Leganes were relegated in their final game of the season, drawing 2-2 with the champions Real Madrid themselves. Oscar’s team may have fell to the drop, but the rising star undoubtedly has a future in Spain’s top flight.

In fact, MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz reports that the 22-year-old No. 10 is getting closer to a permanent move to Villarreal. The fifth-placed La Liga side would pay a modest 20 million euros for the technically gifted midfielder, or they could pay even less if Real were to insert a buy-back clause. Given how rapidly Oscar is developing, that may be in Real’s best interests.

A transfer for Oscar has always been likely. Los Blancos have already sold Hakimi to Inter and are prepared to sell Dani Ceballos to Arsenal permanently. They are prioritizing cash, so getting around 20 million euros for Oscar would be a net win for them. Oscar is definitely talented, but with how crowded Real’s midfield is – especially the attacking midfield – they won’t have space for him. And he’s too good to sit on the bench.

Villarreal would be a huge step up for Rodriguez, who scored nine goals with two assists for Leganes in 2019-2020. Without him, Leganes would have stood no chance, as Oscar often rescued points. He is a brilliant free-kick taker and can score golazos from long range. Villarreal would be fortunate to have him, especially with Santi Cazorla leaving.

There will be competition, but the Yellow Submarine appear to be the favorites, especially after their impressive close to the season. They will be playing in the Europa League in 2020-2021, an that’s a great place for Oscar to show his ability to both Real Madrid and others, too. You know, in case of another transfer or buy-back.
