Could Real Madrid actually sell Lucas Vazquez this summer?

Lucas Vazquez has always been a player who wanted to succeed at Real Madrid and to a certain extent, he really did. The Spaniard was able to find a place for him under Zinedine Zidane and even though it wasn’t as a starter most of the time, he did make a name for himself as a super-sub who always brought with him the energy at a time in the game where the opponents would struggle to contain him.

However, with the new arrivals at the club, Vazquez found himself taking a backseat to Rodrygo Goes for some time and then as things continued to progress, he saw himself on the bench as other players took their place on the right flank such as Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, and even Federico Valverde and Isco. That was not the end for him though as it’s clear that Zidane rates the Spaniard and therefore took the opportunity to play him at right-back as Dani Carvajal’s backup and even then, things didn’t look too good for him.

As we find ourselves reaching another transfer window, the question has to be asked now: Should Lucas Vazquez’s future be at Real Madrid?

At 29-years-old and coming out of a season where he has made a total of 18 appearances in the league (ten of which were as a substitute), it’s fair to assume that Vazquez doesn’t have a real future at the club. If things go as expected in the summer and players depart (namely Bale and James Rodriguez), it doesn’t change much for Vazquez even if Real don’t bring in any players.

More from The Real Champs

With the assumption that Bale, James, and Vazquez leave, it would mean that on right wing, Real  still have Asensio and Rodrygo who can naturally play there, and then they’ll also have Isco and Valverde, whom Zidane wouldn’t mind putting there depending on the match.

As for right-back, the club will have Carvajal and Odriozola – even if Odriozola departs, Lucas Vazquez still isn’t a natural right-back and has struggled there whenever called upon.

This isn’t to say that the player doesn’t have anything to offer, this is merely stating that he doesn’t have anything to offer Real Madrid anymore. With his age and capabilities, Lucas still can be a starter for many other clubs, particularly mid-table clubs in any of Europe’s top leagues.

He would join any club easily being one of the most experienced and decorated players there – with three UEFA Champions League medals and two La Liga medals, the player would walk in with a lot to back him up. He was also a key member of the Champions League triumphs and has shown that he has nerves of steel and is happy to step up to the plate whenever required.

The player has also recently admitted that even though he truly hopes that his future lies at the Spanish capital, he’s preparing himself for the scenario of moving to the Premier League, which has always appealed to him in the past. He’s learning English and has been watching the league for years. This isn’t to say that he should go there but a new challenge with the right club can really go a long way.

If Lucas Vazquez leaves this summer, he will leave through the front door. The players and staff all respect him and the fans would not hate him for leaving. Just like with any departure, there will be fans who decide to voice their dislike of the player – especially though who are continuously sharing memes of him. In general, though, he has a personality that is respected and he makes it very difficult to hate him. He may not always shine on the pitch but you can never deny that he tries his best during every minute he’s there. That is something that unfortunately we do not see from everyone, and it has to be desired.

Vazquez isn’t hated or disliked, he’s just simply surplus to requirements at the club now. Would you choose to start him over Dani Carvajal? What about starting him over Asensio or Rodrygo? This is the curse of being at such a massive club. There usually comes a time where you’re not exactly needed anymore and the sooner you leave, the better it could be for your career. It has been seen with some of our past legends as well.

However, with Zidane’s clear love for the player, anything is possible. They both surely know exactly where Lucas Vazquez stands in the pecking order but Zidane’s plans are usually unknown. Having said that, I highly doubt that Vazquez will be needed for the upcoming season even if Real Madrid fail to sign anyone else.

Lucas Vazquez will always be part of the beautiful UEFA Champions League memory at the club and his contributions will never be forgotten but all good things do eventually come to an end and all signs point to his being the end for him.
