Real Madrid will be selling more than buying in the 2020 summer transfer window.

Last summer, Zinedine Zidane had the first full transfer window in his latest stint as Real Madrid manager, and the man made the most of it. Ushering in a “Revolution”, Zidane snagged top forward Eden Hazard and a host of talented young players, prominently starting left back Ferland Mendy, in a summer window with expenditures totaling a little over 300 million euros.

But Real will be much quieter in 2020. Zidane still has a few world-class talents at the top of his list, such as Paul Pogba and Eduardo Camavinga, but Los Blancos won’t be in a financial position to splash cash. Their Champions League rivals like Juventus and Barcelona may be less prudent, but Florentino Perez isn’t focused on them.

Perez and Los Blancos will be focused on selling first. According to a report from MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz, Real Madrid plan on earning 180 million euros in the summer 2020 transfer window,

Real already sold Achraf Hakimi to Inter Milan for 40 million euros. Other talented loanees who won’t start for Los Blancos in 2020-2021 could be joining Hakimi, such as Sergio Reguilon of Sevilla and Dani Ceballos of Arsenal.

Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez are two players Real have been keen on selling for about a year. Mariano Diaz and Luka Jovic are other forwards who could leave, though it may be hard for find a suitable offer from Jovic, who was purchased for 60 million euros in 2019. And Jovic still receives public support from Zinedine Zidane, as the manager understands Jovic can be a world-class No. 9.

It’s hard to envision Real Madrid making nearly 200 million euros, but if they can sell the likes of Ceballos and Oscar Rodriguez, they can inch closer towards the 100 million euro mark. James is another 25 million euros. Borja Mayoral and Mariano combined should be at least that amount.

So it’s possible. But the question is, what will Real Madrid do with all that money? Use it to buy Kylian Mbappe and another superstar in 2021? Are they saving up to quietly swoop for a big name before 2020-2021 to offer Zidane stronger support?
