Real Madrid has one of the best away kits in the world, yet they have only worn the home whites and alternate neon green kits this season. Why is this?
Classy. Simple. Menacing.
Real Madrid’s navy and gold away kits for the 2019/2020 campaign rank as one of my favorites in the last decade. The drastic difference from the usual white kits that everyone has come to know and love when watching Real Madrid is refreshing.
When reflecting on the La Liga winning season and watching the many thrilling highlights, I noticed that when Los Blancos were not in their usual home whites, they were wearing the neon green alternate kits rather than the navy away kits.
But why?
Upon review, Real Madrid wore the away kits just four times in all competition this season! Despite competing in four separate competitions in the last 11 months, Real wore the navy kits three times in La Liga and just once in the Champions League in that 3-0 defeat in the Parc des Prince against PSG.
I get that many teams around Europe have navy in their crest and uniforms, but Real Madrid often chose the neon green kit over this one.
While the away navy is one of my favorites in recent years, the alternates are one of my least favorites. Something about the green and the color of the numbers, which I can only described as deep blue/navy, is not appealing.
When Real Madrid travels to Manchester to face City in the UCL round of 16 second leg in just over a week, don’t expect to see the navy kits once again.
When the kits were first released, I did not hesitate to buy the away kit with Hazard on the back – of course – and the Champions League patch on the sleeves. It is truly a shame we have not been able to see the club sport them more often.
Hopefully the away jerseys for the 2020/2021 season are just as cool and the team will wear them more often than this year’s.
