Real Madrid: 5 key players to watch at Manchester City
LB Ferland Mendy
When Real Madrid and Manchester City last faced off, Ferland Mendy was one of the standout performers for the losing side. The left back did really well to deal with Riyad Mahrez, whose individual quality on the attacking end was a sight to behold. Mendy’s performance was akin to what he did against Lucas Ocampos in September at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. And that was damage control for his defense – make sure an in-form, world-class right winger didn’t quickly take over the game.
Offensively, Mendy made an impact, too, showing the consistent growth he has made in his first season with Real. Mendy had three dribbles completed and led the team with three key passes, doing everything he could to link up with Vinicius Junior on the left to create goal-scoring opportunities for Karim Benzema, who was, unfortunately, in a slump.
Mendy’s defending against Mahrez will be vital. Mahrez drew three fouls, had three shots on target, completed two dribbles, and had two key passes for City in the first leg. He’s capable of doing even more in the second.
And offensively, Mendy must play a big role if Real Madrid are to score twice against a City defense that is vulnerable but will be coached up to the max on Friday night.
