Real Madrid: 5 players with something to prove in 2020-2021
RB Alvaro Odriozola
Another young player who will have a pivotal 2020-2021 season, Real Madrid right back Alvaro Odriozola, unlike Andriy Lunin, isn’t expected to play with the first team. Odriozola started the 2019-2020 campaign with Los Blancos in the main squad and played well, even assisting in a 4-2 win over Granada.
But after his red card and poor performance at Mallorca, Odriozola fell to the wayside and was loaned to Bayern Munich, where he was predictably unable to get meaningful playing time ahead of impressive new signing Benjamin Pavard.
Odriozola needs a new loan deal. Even though Real don’t have a true backup right back behind Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez is willing to play that role. Furthermore, Odriozola needs playing time to boost his confidence, and he’s not going to get meaningful playing time with the best right back in Europe on Real’s roster.
Therefore, a loan deal to another La Liga club where Odri would be a regular starter makes sense. The pacy fullback can be a great player in this league, but he just needs the confidence and consistency that comes with playing time. This coming season will be a big one for him. Odriozola will want to have a loan season approaching what Sergio Reguilon did at Sevilla.
