Real Madrid won their 34th La Liga title in 2019-2020, and here’s what needs to happen in 2020-2021.

The full 2019-2020 campaign isn’t over for Real Madrid, since they will face Manchester City in the all-important second leg of the Champions League Round of 16. But they won their 34th La Liga trophy in the 2019-2020 season, as Zinedine Zidane brought this team from third-place to first in the span of a year.

Here are three things that must happen for Los Blancos in the 2020-2021 season.

More midfield depth, specifically DM

Casemiro is Real Madrid’s only defensive midfielder, and while he is the best in the world at the position, he runs the risk of being overworked. We have seen multiple times, such as in the first leg against Manchester City, what happens to Los Blancos when Casemiro is fatigued in a big game and falters. He is crucial to their success and must have an actual backup in 2020-2021.

Real Madrid don’t want to make any major signings this summer, but after selling Achraf Hakimi for 40 million euros and with more sales, such as Oscar Rodriguez and Sergio Reguilon, set to follow, they should have enough to sign an affordable backup defensive midfielder. Someone like Espanyol’s Marco Roca makes sense.

Failure to add depth to the midfield this transfer window could prove to be disastrous in 2020-2021, because you never know when depth is needed until it’s too late.
