Our writers look at their favorite moments of the 2019-2020 season for Real Madrid.

The writers at The Real Champs got together for a roundtable analysis of Real Madrid’s 2019/2020 season and answer five questions. The roundtable will be a five-part series, and we start with this question.

What is your favorite match/moment of the 2019/2020 season, and why?

It has to be the 2-0 El Clasico victory over Barcelona, especially Mariano’s goal. We had lost to Barcelona thrice last season, and we were trailing them by a point heading into this match. This match gave the team the psychological push, and Vinicius emerged as a big-game player too. Clasico victories are always indelible since they haven’t been as frequent in the last three seasons.

Well, it has to be winning La Liga, doesn’t it? It was no secret that the league was Zidane’s priority, and given all the ups & downs of the season mixed with the suspension of play due to the pandemic, it was great that the team returned with enough determination to go all the way. If I had to pick a favorite match, though, I will go with our 2-0 victory over Barcelona.

Toni Kroos’ assist versus FC Barcelona. After being rested in the mid-week clash against Manchester City, Kroos returned to the line-up and put in a great performance against our eternal rivals, but his assist was the highlight of his performance. The way Kroos took his time and pointed to Vinicius Junior to make the run and then passing the ball will be etched in the mind of Madridistas for a long time to come. The sequence described almost everything that Kroos is and his importance to the team. A huge goal that helped us win the Clasico and eventually La Liga.

When I read this question, three moments jumped to mind. The first was Courtois’ assist on Karim Benzema’s late tying goal against Valencia. The heat of the moment, the chaos, and celebration make that such a great moment in this bizarre season. The second that I think of is the corner kick goal from Toni Kroos in the Spanish Super Cup. Still can’t get over how amazing that was. My final favorite moment of the year was El Clasico. Goals from Vinicius and Mariano plus keeping a clean sheet against Barca at home is always a treat.

My favorite match of the season was absolutely the Clásico in March. It was like a dream watching Real Madrid prove definitively that they are the better team than Barcelona in 2020. They squashed Barça, especially Raphael Varanë and Sergio Ramos defensively. The best moment of El Clásico? Mariano Diaz’s goal, no doubt!

Prasanna Baidya

My favorite match of the season was against Barcelona at the Bernabeau. El Clasico in March had everything that makes this Real Madrid great. The team defended brilliantly, played fantastic football in the middle of the pitch with control and tenacity, and created plenty of chances. That goal from Vinicius Junior and the assist from Toni Kroos was a joy to watch. Mariano Diaz’s goal at the very last kick of the game a cherry on top!
