Our writers talk about the one thing they wished was different in the 2019-2020 season for Real Madrid.

The writers at The Real Champs got together for a roundtable analysis of Real Madrid’s the 2019/2020 season and answer five questions. They discuss the following question in part three of the roundtable.

One thing that you wished was different about Real Madrid’s season?

Real’s performances in the Champions League. I would’ve said Eden Hazard’s displays, but injuries hit him, and that took the spark away from him. We could’ve, however, at least reached the quarter-finals or semi-finals with the sort of momentum we had after winning ten consecutive La Liga games since the resumption. Anyway, there’s a belief that we’ll come back even stronger next season.

Is it fair to say that I wish Gareth Bale made a “comeback”? Honestly, we can speak all day about things that could have been different such as our UEFA Champions League run or certain changes in the team, but, overall, I think it was a successful season and, even though there’s definitely room for improvement, I don’t think I would have changed too much.

Eden Hazard’s injury vs. PSG. A game where Hazard was great and seemed to be finally in sync with the team ended up with an ankle injury that put Hazard out for almost the entire season. Even when he returned, he looked like he was struggling and couldn’t recover his best form. I can only imagine how much better Madrid would have done over the season if he never got injured.

I wish Ramos had never gotten that red card in the first leg of the round of 16 against Man City. Had Real had their leader on the pitch on August 7th, I think the comeback would have been much easier. Real Madrid as a team did not play poorly in that game, it was the shortcomings of Rafa Varane, unfortunately.

Kevin Parvizi
I wish Eden Hazard never got injured against PSG. If that never happened, I firmly believe Real Madrid would still be in the Champions League, and Hazard would be recognized as one of the top five players in the world again. He was SO good in November, and that injury hurt his confidence and led to two re-injuries later in the year at crucial moments.

The Champions League match against Manchester City is fresh on my mind, so I’ll have to go with that performance. I wish Real Madrid performed at a level we know they are capable of doing. It’s not even about progressing in the competition. The performance in the second leg was so lackluster that it was embarrassing. I just wanted to see them give it their all and fight till the end. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
