Real Madrid: Nacho will help the club even on the way out
Real Madrid must sell defender Nacho Fernandez this summer, but he will help Los Blancos one more time on the way out.
The 2020 summer transfer window will be a difficult one for Real Madrid, because they must say goodbye to players who have helped the club immensely over the years. Nacho Fernandez and Lucas Vazquez have grown up with the club and have been key utility players through triumph after triumph, so selling them would be especially difficult.
Vazquez’s future remains unclear, as Zinedine Zidane favors him and likes his versatility, including at right back. Nacho, on the other hand, seems to be as good as gone.
Capable of playing as a center back, left back, or right back, Nacho has received interest from clubs in La Liga, as well as Benfica.
But when it comes to the interest from La Liga, Nacho isn’t biting. Manu de Juan of AS recently reported that the veteran defender will not even think about signing for another team in Spain. If Real Madrid must sell him this summer, then he would want to leave La Liga.
The simple reason is that Nacho cannot bear to play against Real Madrid. They are the club he has played for since 2001 as a youth player, and they are the club he loves. He could have transferred in the summer of 2019 but wanted to stay in Madrid. And now that he might be sold to help the team’s financial situation, he does not want to leave.
Sevilla wanted to sign Nacho last year
Last year, it was Sevilla who came calling for Nacho, and they are now Europa League champions and headed to the Champions League in 2020-2021. This year, Valencia is interested in the 30-year-old defender, who had some quality performances in 2019-2020 when called upon at the left back position.
Nacho can still play for big clubs in Europe at a Champions League level. Teams value his veteran presence, aerial ability, calm passing, versatility, and defensive know-how. He is the jack of all trades, as he can play any of the positions in a traditional back four.
The Spanish international will not be short on suitors, but the teams in La Liga who are pushing for his signature will have to look elsewhere.
It is incredible to see the bond Nacho has with Real Madrid. Absolutely nobody of decency in the fanbase would fault Nacho in the slightest for leaving. Many were even willing to see him leave last summer and succeed with Julen Lopetegui at Sevilla, knowing it could be a good move for him to get regular playing time with another respected manager at a good Spanish club.
But even so, Nacho doesn’t want to go up against Los Blancos. He loves the club too much, and for that, Nacho continues to show why he is a true Madridista through and through.
