Real Madrid Transfers: Mariano Diaz suitor no longer interested
Real Madrid will have a tough time finding a suitable landing spot for Mariano Diaz this summer.
Mariano Diaz has never stopped trying to find a role at Real Madrid. It’s admirable how hard the veteran striker has worked to carve out a place at the Santiago Bernabeu, even with the legendary Karim Benzema and the possible No. 9 of the future in Luka Jovic ahead of him in the lineup.
Against Barcelona in March, Mariano had his fairytale moment with a game-sealing goal within seconds of his introduction into the game. But since then, nothing has changed for Mariano – not even the caliber of clubs interested in him.
It seemed like Real Madrid would be able to loan him to Benfica, and while the two clubs agreed to terms, Mariano wasn’t notified of the deal and rejected the offer to join Benfica on loan.
Mariano wants to join a club that is competing in the Champions League and can take on his wages, but Benfica did not satisfy the latter. They could not afford his wages, and Mariano was understandably unwilling to take a paycut to facilitate a deal to a club outside of Europe’s top five. Plus, competition will be fierce there after Benfica signed young German star Luca Waldschmidt to play striker.
Real Madrid must find a new landing spot for Mariano Diaz
According to a report from O Jogo, Benfica are moving on from their interest in Mariano. They will move forward with the players they have, including new signings like Waldschmidt, and let Real Madrid and Mariano Diaz figure things out on their own.
It makes sense for Benfica to move on from this deal. If Mariano isn’t high on the club and doesn’t want to take a paycut, it just doesn’t make sense for Benfica to keep negotiating with Los Blancos.
For Real, things become difficult now. Mariano has high standards for his next club, because he knows he has a lot to offer to a Champions League side. But how many clubs are going to be interested in buying Mariano or even loaning for him this summer? It’s difficult to get deals done in this window, but as the deadline draws nearer over the course of September, perhaps Real can find a more suitable transfer partner.
