Real Madrid: Three reasons why Sergio Reguilón should not be sold
By Parshva Shah
Sergio Reguilón is just 23!
Marcelo and Ferland Mendy are 32 and 25 years old respectively. Marcelo is into his penultimate year of contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, which means that he would be 34 in 2022, when his contract expires.
To be honest, I don’t believe Real Madrid will extend Marcelo’s contract unless he can turn the clock back and reinstate himself as the undisputed first-choice left-back of Real Madrid ahead of Ferland Mendy.
Mendy seems to have the confidence of Zinedine Zidane and was one of the biggest factors in helping Real Madrid have an unparalleled defensive astuteness in 2019-20.
Marcelo’s performances in the last two seasons have been less than convincing, conceding his starting spot to Sergio Reguilón in 2018-19, and then to Ferland Mendy last season. He has entered an obvious and inevitable decline.
Zidane doesn’t have a place for Reguilón in the upcoming season, and that’s justified. Marcelo cannot be asked to leave when he clearly has something to offer. Mendy proved to be indispensable once he nailed down a spot in Zidane’s XI.
When Marcelo’s contract expires in 2022, Reguilón will be 25. We cannot also rule out the possibility of (god forbid) Ferland Mendy being a one or two-season wonder at max.
Reguilón is not an injury-prone player, so he should be entering his prime at the age of 25. If he does return if and once Marcelo leaves, he would be able to defend the white shirt for at least a better half of a decade.
