Real Madrid: Three reasons why Sergio Reguilón should not be sold
By Parshva Shah
Sergio Reguilón will help save a lot of money
Real Madrid is a club capable of splurging huge chunks of money to sign the best of talents. However, that doesn’t mean that they will just spend money for the sake of spending.
Los Blancos have restructured their transfer policy over the last few years. They have focused on signing the brightest and most promising young players, preferably players who are in their teens, so as to not spend of them once they become superstars of football.
Sergio Reguilón is a La Fabrica product. However, his market value will keep escalating if he can perform the way he has in the last two seasons.
Martin Ødegaard’s return to Real Madrid is the best example. He is a direct replacement to the ageing Luka Modrić (who turns 35 tomorrow, on September 9th). Recalling Ødegaard saved Real Madrid from spending at least €50-60 million on a player of similar profile.
Reguilón is adamant that he wants to make a name for himself donning the Royal White jersey. With that said, Real Madrid must recognize the quality of this player and send him on a.) either a two-year loan deal (to Sevilla in all likelihood) or b.) sell him for at least €30 million to a team that can guarantee regular playing time and would allow a buy-back clause to be inserted.
Manchester United is heavily linked to the signing of Reguilón but we are still not sure if they would allow a buy-back clause to be inserted.
Two or three years down the line, Real Madrid will want someone who can compete for a starting role with Ferland Mendy. A certain 19-year-old in Miguel Gutiérrez is creating buzz in the youth circles and is backed to have a successful career at Real Madrid, with Zidane reportedly a big fan of the promising left-back.
Football is filled with uncertainties. Marcelo might end up staying beyond 2022. Mendy might be a one-season wonder. Miguel Gutiérrez might become a starter by 2022. Who knows? There are endless probabilities.
But Sergio Reguilón will perhaps save Real Madrid from splashing at least €40-50 million on another up-and-coming left-back (the fee might be greater in a few years considering how inflated the market has become).
Whatever ends up happening, I root for Reguilón to go down as a Real Madrid legend. Madridistas all around the world seem to love him, and I love him too. He is a fascinating player. If he’s sold/loaned out, let’s hope he can come back even stronger!
