Real Madrid will open the season next Sunday against Real Sociedad. Here’s what Madridistas can be excited for.
La Liga is back. Spanish football returned on the weekend of Sept. 12 with the first Matchday of the 2020-2021 season, but Real Madrid won’t be in action until next week when they travel to the Anoeta Stadium to face Real Sociedad.
Here are three things for fans of Los Blancos to watch for on Matchday 2 when Real Madrid and Real Sociedad face off.
1. A Martin Odegaard sighting, but in a Real Madrid shirt
Martin Odegaard nearly led Real Sociedad to Champions League qualification last season, pulling the strings for one of the most exciting teams in Europe. La Real gave Los Blancos all they could handle in their second La Liga fixture of the 2019-2020 season, and they even defeated the Royal Whites in the Copa del Rey.
Now, Odegaard is back with Real Madrid after Zinedine Zidane requested the Norway international’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player’s role with the team in 2020-2021 is unclear, but he should be important to Zidane’s plans. Odegaard can start on the right or as an attacking midfielder, but he could very well be a solution as the team’s right-sided midfielder.
Odegaard isn’t guaranteed to start against the side he helped last season, but it would be exciting for Madridistas to see him on the pitch, delivering a fine performance at the Anoeta in the process.
