3. Martin Ødegaard

The Norwegian star finally returned to Real Madrid his season after a long spell of loans. After completing a great season at Real Sociedad, Zinedine Zidane reportedly called him personally to tell him to return and with good reason.

Los Blancos’ decision to not make any signings meant that the Whites would be heading into the new season with the same midfield as last. While the midfield got the job done, it was clear that the team was in dire need of more creativity from the midfield. So it only made sense to bring back the Norwegian and not keep him at Sociedad for another season.

This isn’t to say that Ødegaard was brought back, simply out of necessity. He was great last season at Real Sociedad and wowed everyone who watched him. It was clear that he was ready to play at Real Madrid and not on loan at any other team.

While there were some concerns as to if Ødegaard would be fit to play due to his knee issues, he was included in the squad list and made the starting 11. It’s clear that Zidane counts on him and sees him as a key player. The manager started Ødegaard in his preferred position as a ’10’ to ensure he got the best out of him.

While the Norwegian didn’t amaze, there were plenty of positive signs from the player. Floating between the lines, he was always looking to receive passes and play a direct game. He combined well with Karim Benzema on a couple of occasions showing that they can form a good connection.

It was a positive performance from Ødegaard that showed he can help the team in unlocking tight, stubborn defenses.
