Real Madrid CB Raphael Varane

The last time Real Madrid faced Real Valladolid, Raphael Varane had himself a day with a goal and an own goal “created”. Varane was astute defensively alongside Eder Militao, who started for a suspended Sergio Ramos.

Militao’s injury is serious enough that it will likely cost him another match, and we may not see him until after the international break. Unfortunately, updates on his injury have been scarce.

But fortunately, Ramos and Varane have started the season in excellent form. Ramos was great in both matches, scoring the winning goal from the spot at Real Betis. Varane hasn’t scored yet, but he’s been even better defensively. He stymied a few dangerous, developing plays in and around the 18-yard box on Saturday night, showing his quick-thinking and sharp positioning.

Varane is one of the best center backs in the world, and he continues to show it. Because mistakes in defense end up being glaring, we focus on them and forget the nine out of ten great performances a player has. Varane is putting together more of those great performances to start the 2020-2021 season, and hopefully at least Madridistas are taking note of his fine work. Valladolid don’t have any attackers who should trouble the French star.
