One of Real Madrid’s best players through the first four games of 2020-2021 is on an expiring contract, but he clearly plans on staying.
Although Real Madrid center midfielder Luka Modric had a slow start to the 2019-2020 season after a surprisingly dismal 2018-2019 campaign, he eventually became one of the stars of the team again, rebounding like so many other experienced players on the team under Zinedine Zidane.
Modric stepped up his performances to another level when Real Madrid were pushing for the title after the COVID break. And through the first five Matchdays of the 2020-2021 season, he has been absolutely brilliant. Raphael Varane, Fede Valverde, and Vinicius Junior have all played well, but I cannot think of an outfield player who has been more impactful than Modric.
Via Football-Espana.net, today’s MARCA headline states that Luka Modric is willing to take a wage cut on his new deal with Real Madrid in order to re-sign with the team beyond the 2020-2021 season.
Real Madrid’s Luka Modric is still one of the best midfielders in Europe
Modric isn’t the only Real Madrid player with one year left on his deal. Captain Sergio Ramos’ contract runs out, but he is a slam-dunk to re-sign. Veteran right winger Lucas Vazquez, who also functions as a backup right back, is also in his last year with the club. However, Modric is absolutely the most important player in the squad with one year left in his deal, and his importance has been highlighted over the past few months.
Madridistas want Modric to stay with Los Blancos as long as possible. He may be 35 years old now, but he is still one of the best midfielders in European football and right up there with anyone in La Liga, including teammates Toni Kroos and Casemiro.
His dribbling, command of the pitch, chance-creation, awareness in build-up play, energy, and defending have all been evident. It is scary how much he can still put into the game in the last 10 minutes despite his age, as he proves that age is merely a number.
