Real Madrid falls to Shakhtar Donetsk 2-3 at Stadia de Alfredo De Stefano in their first Champions League outing for the 2020/2021 season following a dreadful first-half performance.

Real Madrid looked awful in their first Champions League match of the season as they fall to defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk at home. Zinedine Zidane’s men seemed unprepared and clueless in the first half and went down three goals by halftime. Second-half goals from Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior gave hopes for a comeback, but ultimately Los Blancos failed to score the third goal.

Zidane gave Luka Jovic and Rodrygo the start in the frontline while Ferland Mendy started at right-back. Here is how the players performed.

Manager

Zinedine Zidane – 3/10

Real Madrid’s first-half display against Shakhtar was awful. The team did not look prepared for the match. The Merengues lacked intensity and intent in the first 45 minutes. That all comes down to the coach.

Zidane failed to get his team ready for their first Champions League match of the 2020/2021 season, and he has to take the blame for it.

Goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois – 7.5/10

Courtois continued his brilliant form in goal with multiple one-on-one saves. Real Madrid’s defense did him no justice as he wasn’t at fault for any of the three that went in.
