What is Rodrygo’s role for Real Madrid?

Rodrygo Goes started against Shakhtar Donetsk and, as has been the issue for so many wide forwards this season, did a whole lot of nothing. The young Real Madrid winger came off the bench for about 10 minutes in El Clasico to see the game out, offering relief for a worn-out Marco Asensio as Los Blancos finished the match with a 3-1 win.

The young Brazilian picked up the “assist” for Luka Modric’s goal, though the reality is that the Croatian legend did all the work there. Still, Rodrygo did well to find the star midfielder, even as he had three poor touches in that limited appearance.

Rodrygo is at his best on the left side, and he’s had a couple of chances to play there this season. But his path to playing time is easier on the right, hence why he started there at Real Sociedad on Matchday 1 and got minutes there in El Clasico.

It seems like Rodrygo is on the periphery of the squad, and he’s one of a few players who has a hard time getting into the lineup. He’d have a lot more success if he could get momentum with consistent starts, but who does he start over? Hazard is coming back, Vinicius is having a very good season, and Asensio is better on the right side with his sweet left foot.

Rodrygo’s role will be one of the big questions to ponder for the rest of 2020.
