Real Madrid at Sevilla, La Liga, Dec. 5

The month of December will begin with another match against Shakhtar Donetsk, who should field an even stronger side than the one that defeated Los Blancos 3-2 at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. And then, a few days later, Real must play against Julen Lopetegui’s Sevilla.

Although Real Madrid beat Sevilla twice in 2019-2020, they did so by the skin of their teeth. Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan is always a tough prospect, but the rival club are arguably even stronger this season. They may be 12th in the table, but they have two excellent center backs and an emerging threat at striker in Youssef En-Nesyri.

Real Madrid cannot be satisfied with a draw at Sevilla. They need to win this match at the Sanchez Pizjuan and demonstrate their ability to win these tough matches. They did so last year 1-0 amidst uncertainty around the club’s ability to compete for the title, and they ended up winning the title. In 2020, they must do the same.

It’s tough that Los Blancos have two huge road matches at the end of 2020, as the road match at Villarreal is just as daunting as a trip to the Sanchez Pizjuan. But Real cannot complain. They need to get results and bank the points that could be crucial to winning the title in the home stretch of the season.
